Confederate General led the Confederate army at the Battle of Antietam in September of 1862. Lee lost the battle and had to retreat back to Virginia. Union General George B. McClellan led the Union army to the victory.
As the Battle of Antietam began to unfold, General Lee repulsed the Union assault on his lines by throwing three quarters of his army to Stonewall Jackson's front lines. And, the Union attack was uncoordinated. Jackson was thus able to neutralize three Union corps.
