Njord
Viking longboats were rowed with oars till they caught wind in a single large square sail.
I know not the Norse God of Wind, but I do know that Odin is the Norse God of War.
floating on the water and the direction is directed by the wind :P
by using its sails and if theres no wind they use oars
the oar... because it needed to be indepentent from the wind dirction
The Viking god of the sea is Njord. He is associated with seafaring, wind, fishing, and prosperity. Njord was also known for his ability to calm the seas and protect sailors.
Unlike later ships of the Age of Sail, Viking longboats had many oars, as did the earlier ships of the Roman Empire. (see the drawing in the link below)
Frey is the God of Wind and rain I believe. Read The Wotanist Bible by Hardy Lloyd. Wotan is the God of War.
Wind energy and thermal energy would also be utilized in a Viking ship. Wind energy would power the sails to propel the ship, while thermal energy would be generated for cooking and heating purposes on the vessel.
The Viking longboats were long, open boats that had many sets of oars used to row the ships close to shore, or in calm winds. They used large square sails for long voyages.
If the wind was favourable, they could stop rowing and rest, while their single rectangular sail helped to carried their longboat along.
