James A. Johnston. His tenure lasted from 1934 to 1948.

Life in Alcatraz in 1935 was ... well i would imagine it to be brutal for the prisoners. A few people who payed a visit to alcatraz were scar face (Al Capone) and the bird man.
Al Capone was indicted in 1931 for income tax evasion and violations of the Volstead Act. The violations of the Volstead Act were later dropped but he was sent, nevertheless, to Atlanta U.S. Penitentiary in May of 1932 and was later on sent to Lincoln Heights Jail temporarily before being sent to Alcatraz for the remainder of his sentence.
According to http://www.bop.gov//about/history/alcatraz.jsp, maximum capacity of U.S. Penitentiary, Alcatraz was 336 inmates. However, the average prison population between 1935 and 1960 was 263, the highest number (302) was recorded in 1937, and the lowest (222) was recorded in 1947.
