Hatshepsut was one of few women to rule Egypt. Once her husband, Thutmose the second, died in 1504 B.C. He had left a son who was too young to rule. So, Hatshepsut made herself Egypt's new pharaoh. She had fooled everyone, making them think she was a man. She did this by, wearing a false beard, dressing as a man, and carried all the rituals of a king. Hatshepsut did this because no one would want to bow to a woman.

Cleopatra dressed in men's clothes and wore a false beard because Pharaohs were believed to be the god Horus in human form. And Horus was a man, so basically, if she didn't she couldn't become Pharaoh.
