Ernst Gehrcke was perhaps one of Mr. Einstein's most persistant adversaries, at least in Germany. However, many scientists of the day did not understand Mr. Einsteins theories, especially the Special Theory of Relativity which on initial presentation, it is rumored, was understood by almost no one present. Some may have come across as opponents in newspaper and magazine articles simply out of ignorance, but Mr. Gehrcke was overtly critical and was considered a leader among German scientists deriding Mr. Einsteins work.
