Bilbo is an anomaly in that he is an only child. Most hobbits have really large families.
Another interesting fact is that Bilbo's ancestor, Bandobras ("Bullroarer") Took was "so huge (for a hobbit) that he could ride a horse." The story goes on that Bullroarer charged the goblins of Mount Dram, and knocked their king Golfimbul's head off with a club, sending it three hundred feet (if memory serves) down a gopher hole, thereby winning the battle and inventing Golf in the same moment. (The play on words, whereby the game of Golf gets its name from Golfimbul, is one of Tolkien's great strokes of brilliance.)
Bilbo was the son of Bungo Baggins (who built Bag End) and Belladonna Took. Bungo was the son of Mungo Baggins and Laura Grubb. Mungo was the son of Balbo Baggins and Berylla Boffin. That's as far back as the "Baggins" tree goes.
Through the Took line, though, Bilbo would have been related to "Bullroarer" Took and the Thains of the Shire. It can be assumed that Bungo was wealthy in part because his wife was a Took and the dowry would have been substantial (though there is never any indication that hobbits use dowries).
Interestingly, Frodo was also the result of a marriage between the Baggins and Took lines.
