After the fall of Mughals regional Indian royalty were able to keep their titles but they were vastly limited in terms of power. When the British had an order for the Indian people, they usually sent the decree to the royalty who then had to declare it to the people. Indian royalty who defied the crown were usually put down and replaced by a more willing royal. There was a big imrovement in transportation and communication but its benefits were limited to cities or merchant class who were able to import and export more efficiently.
