The British Royal Family was the last Royal Family of India. Before the British consolidated the Indian subcontinent into one dominion and proclaimed their monarch to be the Emperor of India, India consisted of a number of independent "countries" ruled by a variety of nobles and there was no Royal Family of India.

How was life like for people in India in 1870's?

After the fall of Mughals regional Indian royalty were able to keep their titles but they were vastly limited in terms of power. When the British had an order for the Indian people, they usually sent the decree to the royalty who then had to declare it to the people. Indian royalty who defied the crown were usually put down and replaced by a more willing royal. There was a big imrovement in transportation and communication but its benefits were limited to cities or merchant class who were able to import and export more efficiently. The villages or Agriculture sector remained backward. During British rule, there were numerous famines and obviously, the working class poor people were hit the hardest by it.
