He died after becoming involved in a fight at the Eureka Hotel, also known as Bentley's Hotel, on 7 October 1854. The hotel owner, Bentley, and his staff were absolved of any wrongdoing in an ensuing inquest. The miners, however, felt this was unjust and met together outside the hotel on 17 October 1854 - a meeting that ended in a riot. During the riot the hotel was burnt to the ground.
