There were 30 participants: Astruc, Attendu, Béliard, Boudin, Bracquemond, Brandon, Bureau, Cals, Cézanne, Colin, Debras, Degas, Guillaumin, Latouche, Lepic, Lépine, Levert, Meyer, de Molins, Monet, Morisot, Mulot-Durivage, de Nittis, A. Ottin, L. Ottin, Pissaro, Renoir, Rouart, Robert, and Sisley. At first the committee (Monet, Degas, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, and Morisot) in charge debated over whether or not to include Cézanne. Degas pushed for Boudin, Barquemond, and Meissonier - fashionable painters who would boost credibility. Pissarro pointed out that if these people were to be included, Cézanne - a friend and ally - had to be, too.

What is an impressionist?

ImpressionismA style of painting that originated in France about 1870. Paintings of casual subjects, often executed outdoors, using divided brush strokes to capture the mood of a particular moment as defined by the transitory effects of light and color. The first Impressionist exhibition was held in 1874. Impressionism was essentially the study of how light hits an object.- I have gone back to some things that can't possibly be done: water, with weeds waving at the bottom. It is a wonderful sight, but it drives one to crazy to try to paint it. But that is the kind of thing I am always tackling.* artist quotations from Monet's letter to art critic and friend Gustave Geffroy, 22 June 1890; as quoted in "Letters of the great artists - from Blake to Pollock -", Richard Friedenthal, Thames and Hudson, London, 1963, p. 129See: Haystacks by Claude Monet.Haystacks were a series of impressionist paintings of the same subject in a variety of different seasons, days, and hours. The time of day, the actual day, and the seasons all affected the lighting. Monet therefore did a series analyzing the light hitting the specific object.
