Massassoit led the Pokanoket indians, who belonged to the area's Wampanoag Confederacy. Massassoit had much to celebrate. Earlier in the year, on March 22, 1621, he had concluded with the Pilgrlims a peace treaty that was favorable to his confederacy, and unfriendly to the rival area Narragansett indians.
