Isn't it Shepherds...
If the cattle are killed, then Odysseus will lose all his men and his ship, and may only return home in bad-shape, finding his house over-run with high-handed men, devouring his stores under the pretext of paying court and making presents to his wife.
Because all the cattle that had been raised back east were all killed due to meat needed for the Civil War soldiers. Meat (in the form of beef) came into high demand, so men set out west to find the cattle that were supposedly roaming the south-western part of the US. Upon finding them, they rounded them up in herds up to and over a thousand head and trailed them back east. This turned into a profit-making venture, which attracted more men to ride the range and herd cattle to markets back east.

I really don't remember him as a horse rancher. Several of his westerns he played cattle ranchers/barons. One of his movies had Wayne and men on a cattle drive and brought with them a small band of extra horses. They ran free with the herd. Maybe that's what you were referring to.
Eurylochus convinces the men that the gods will be appeased if they sacrifice some of the cattle to them.
The Roman emperor was watched over by a body of men named the Praetorian Guard.
The men that move cattle from place to place are called ranchers or cowboys. They live on ranches.
Eurylochus, one of Odysseus' men, justified eating the cattle, and the other men joined him. They decided to do so after being on the verge of starvation.
In the Odyssey, Helios is the sun god who owns a herd of sacred cattle. When Odysseus' men eat the cattle despite being warned not to, it angers Helios, leading to their destruction and further complicating Odysseus' journey. Helios' anger symbolizes the consequences of disrespecting the gods in Greek mythology.
I think a lot of it was on the job training. We have lived with and raised cattle for centuries. The novel approach was using a horse to herd and manage the cattle. This was necessary due to the lack of fences and long distances to cover. The Mexicans/Spanish contributed a lot of riding and roping skills to cowboys. The modern American Cowboy really started to develop after the Civil War. As young men returned home they needed a way to make money. Lots of cattle had been let go or escaped from farms during the war. These men had to develop skills to round the cattle up and brand them so they could sell them. Texas is really the birth place of the American Cowboy because of this.
