Many people explored CA. Some of the first were the Spanish and they began the mission system and founded cities in CA. Sir Francis Drake found San Francisco Bay while he was exploring the coastline of CA. Many trappers came into CA as well. One famous one was Jedediah Smith. He was one of the first white men to see Yosemite Valley and lived for a long time with the Native Americans in the central San Joaquin valley. John C. Fremont' and his men entered CA for President Polk in the 1840's to see if they could take it away from Mexico. After the gold rush thousands came into the territory to seek gold and it became a state on Sept. 9, 1850. Stories of a land with amazon women, gold, and lush landscapes drew people for centuries to the land we call CA today.
