In American history the Calhounites were the followers of the antebellum senator from South Carolina John C. Calhoun. A fervent believer in "states rights" his rhetoric lead directly to the nullification crisis on 1832. South Carolina nullifed a federal tarrif on the grounds that it was unconstitutional. Andrew Jackson mobilized the army and was preparted to prevent South Carloina from leaving the Union. Ultiamtly war was averted. Calhoun died in 1850 and and less than a decade later South Carolina attepmted to secede- this time for real. The American Civil War had begun...
