Vasco da Gama of Portugal 'discovered' Calicut in 1498 A.D. This is however a misnomer. Trade with India was prevalent since ancient times. However, with the Arab reign over middle east, trade between India and Europe was regulated (and restricted) by the Arabs. Hence there was a motivation for Europeans to discover an alternate (sea-bound) route to the Indian subcontinent, which da Gama successfully did in 1498, when he landed at Calicut. Trade between India (Calicut included) and Europe however persisted for centuries before this as well.
From what I remember from my history classes, I think that they were well greeted at first, but then there were some misunderstandings and it pretty much ended with portuguese ships firing cannon balls at Indian people.
I like to think that every man who landed was an important person. However, if you mean the top leaders they were Generals Omar Bradley, and Bernard Montgomery.I like to think that every man who landed was an important person. The Ukulele was believed to have been first made in 1880 in Hawaii. A group of Portuguese immigrants landed there in 1879 and had a Portuguese instrument called the machete with them. Several of the wood workers developed the ukulele using local materials.
The Portiuguese were the pilots on ships and had the maps. They helped find South America and landed along the coast.
