A disciple is a person who is taught or trained in a particular doctrine. For example you could be a disciple of Freud.
Jesus Christ's disciples were people He taught and trained. Or today a disciple can be someone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Additional Comment:
The term 'disciple' means 'to imitate' someone. A disciple of Jesus then would lead a life as much as possible like Jesus did in the Gospel accounts. When fully repentant and baptized, he/she receives the promised Holy Spirit of God, aka of Jesus Christ, to be able to grow and accomplish the works God has laid out for them.
These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.

Good answer above but a little extra info :
Some people use only the word "apostle" to refer to the original twelve who you have listed above rather than the word disciples.
some use the phrase "the original twelve disciples", " or "The Twelve".
some people will *not* use the word Disciple to refer to the original twelve and insist upon the use of apostle for the twelve only and all others who follow Christ are called disciples.
There were twelve disciples Jesus called to help Him: Simon, Peter, Andrew, James the Greater, his brother John, Phillip, Thomas, Matthew, James the Lesser, Judas, Thaddeus, and Bartholomew.

Peter, one of Jesus' disciples
Christianity is the worship of Jesus Christ. Development of Christianity would have started with the disciples when they become aware and believed that Jesus was the Son of God.
Either Jesus or the disciples
Primarily it was the 12 Apostles of Jesus and other disciples who help these.
There wasn't a specific "first branch" associated with Christianity. The disciples preached to the Jews about Jesus. Then the disciples went all around the world starting churches. However, there are 3 major branches of Christianity. These branches include:Eastern OrthodoxyProtestantismRoman CatholicismMany people believe there to be only 1 form of Christianity. This may be true, but Christianity has branches!
The beginning of Christianity was in Israel at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came on the disciples to form the Catholic Church.
Jesus sent out his disciples to set up Christian churches, so I suppose Jesus started Christianity.
Pual and judea
The role that the disciples played in the development of Christianity included establishment of the church such as that began by Peter.
Christianity finds it's origins in Israel. This is where Jesus did most of he teachings, and where he was crucified. Also, the disciples started their ministry in Jerusalem.
The origin of Christianity is not really mentioned and it is from the time of Jesus and the Pentecost. First Christian is those who follow Jesus his apostles and disciples.
