In the original published editions of the diary, Anne gave them the pseudonym the "van Daams".

All editions of the diary published in the last 25 years or so have gone to the real names of all those involved, and the "van Daams" were actually a family named "van Pels". "Albert Dusel" was actually a man named Fritz Pfeffer.
