The first black West Point cadet was former slave James Webster Smith, who entered the academy in 1870 but did not graduate. Henry O. Flipper was the first black cadet to graduate from West Point, in 1877.

Union General Henry Washington Benham graduated from West Point in 1837. He was ranked first in a graduating class of 50 cadets. Benham was a great engineer and worked in that capacity in the Army of the Potomac.

Union General George Leonard Andrews graduated from West Point in 1851. He was ranked first in his graduating class of cadets numbering 42. Andrews served in the Eastern Theater, and his most perilous battle was at Antietam in 1862.
1802, not 1805 West point was founded in 1802 and is still educating cadets to this very day.
