1) The first ones who followed Christ were from among the Jewish people (Israelites). The 12 apostles were all Israelites. The 70 disciples who were sent out preaching by Jesus were Jews also. In fact the different Bible books were all written by those of Jewish heritage. No doubt this was all in keeping with God's promise to Abraham, that "all nations" "would be blessed by means of Abraham's seed".

2) After Jesus died; at Pentecost, some 'proselytes' became baptized. A proselyte was a 'convert' / one who also embraced Judaism, (their males getting circumcised, as a sign of their conversion to Judaism.) The Israelites were to view them as a 'brother'. In Esther 8:17 The Septuagint reads: "And many of the Gentiles were circumcised, and became Jews."

3) Next, the Samaritans. They were somewhat of a 'mixed people' due to intermarriage; Israelites intermarrying with peoples whom the Assyrians brought in to live among those left behind when Assyrian destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel. The Jews despised these people. Acts 8:14-17 shows that the apostles laid their hands upon those who accepted Christ, and they too received holy spirit.

4) Lastly, Acts 10:1-48 shows that the Gentiles(peoples from any heritage) too became Christians (without needing to be circumcised). Cornelius, was the first uncircumcised Gentile to become a Christian. In his case, he received holy spirit even before being baptized; (although it happened in succession.)

How did Christianity get its name?

Christ is a Greek word meaning "Anointed One"; and is used to refer to Jesus of Nazareth; whom Christians believe to be the son of God. Many of Jesus's early followers were Greek. The term "Christian" was first used in the Greek city of Antioch (now in Turkey) as a pejorative term for the followers of Christ; eventually it became the accepted name for a follower of Jesus. Therefore in Greek "Christianity" means "The way of the followers of Christ"
