Some famous explorers that traveled through North Dakota were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. During the winter of 1804 to 1805, the Lewis and Clark expedition party built a fort near Washburn, North Dakota.

The late 1700's and early 1800's found French, Spanish, Canadian, and English explorers and traders establishing trading posts in and traveling through North Dakota. Later came Scottish and Irish settlements. When the Dakota Territory was opened for homesteading, settlers came to North Dakota from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany (also Germans from Russia) and Czechoslovakia.
Spanish came with weapons into North/South America, so all early explorers had weapons.
Alexander Henry, Jr., of British descent, established a fur post at Pembina in present day North Dakota, in 1801. This post, sponsored by the Britich crown, became the center for white settlement. Those who came to the area included British, Americans, Canadians, and French settlers and fur traders.
France claimed the area now known as North Dakota, along with most of North America, in 1682. In 1713, France gave the northeastern half of North Dakota to Great Britain.
