The first man to reach the north pole was an engineer in the American navy called Robert Edwin Peary, who reached the pole on April 6 1909 along with his employee Matthew Henson.

The claim that Robert Peary was the first to reach The North Pole is still hotly disputed.

The second man to the North Pole was Roald Amundsen, he failed being the first to the North Pole, so he tried his luck for the South Pole but Robert Falcon Scott was too planning to reach the South. Amundsen did become first to reach South and also became the first person to visit both North and South Pole. Scott then arrived at the South Pole about a month after, then on his trip back he passed away about 77miles away from a food depo.

Roald Amundsen only flew over the North Pole in an Airship.

This answer is not entirely correct. It is true that Robert Peary did lead the expedition but the actual person that made it to the Noth Pole first was the BLACK explorer Mathew Alexander Henson. Henson had accompanied Perry on 3 other expeditions as well.

The reason Henson was chosen were based on Henson's studies of the arctic region and his knowledge of naval science.

During their 4th and last expedition Perry came down with exhaustion and snow-blindness within 60 miles of their goal so Henson was sent by himself. Henson succeeded in reaching the North Pole and he documented his feat and records in a book. A Negro Explorer at the North Pole which was published in 1912. Back when it happened it wasn't common to give blacks credits for their accomplishments and it's sad to see that the practice hasn't changed much.

There is now considerable doubt that Peary and Henson actually reached the North Pole because of by Peary's omission to produce records of observed data for steering, for the direction and variation of the compass, and for his longitudinal position at any time.

Well for many years people thought it was Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett, but unfortunately that has been proven to be false. So no Americans were the first to fly over the North Pole. That honour goes to 16 men and one dog who were all aboard the Airship Norge when it flew over the North Pole on May 16th 1926.
