Jamestown was the first settlement in what became Virginia (named in honor of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth) and Plymouth was the first settlement in what would become the Massachusetts Bay colony.
The first English colony was established on Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina, in 1585. A second colony, the famous Lost Colony, was established two years later, but disappeared. A third colony, established in 1607 at Jamestown in Virginia, was more successful.
Little Women was first published in two volumes, in 1868 and 1869.

The first permanent colony was Jamestown. While it did not prosper in the beginning it was the first colony never to be completely abandoned. During and after the leadership of John Smith things started to look up for the colony, and while it hit a few more major stumbling blocks it eventually became a successful enterprise
