Joe Foss, the first AFL commissioner, pushed for expansion of the league in the 1960s. In 1965, Danny Thomas and Joseph Robbie bought an expansion team for 7.5 million dollars and named it the Miami Dolphins. The AFL later merged with the NFL in 1969.
