∙ 9y agoCharles Babbage proposed the Difference Machine in 1822, the first automatic computing machine, though it would not resemble a modern computer. In 1837 he developed the first mechanical computer, called the Analytic Engine and which contained algorithms which allowed it to perform basic computational functions. Alan Turing created the first machine that would form the basis for the first concept of modern computing in 1937. Other key players include John Vincent Atanasoff, who began developing the first digital computer in 1937, and J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly at University of Pennsylvania, who developed the ENAIC, which was constructed over 3 years from 1943 to 1946. The contributions of each of these individuals helped jump start the development of technology that forms the modern computer today.

∙ 14y agoCharles Babbage (26 December 1791 – 18 October 1871) Charles Babbage was an English mathematician, philosopher, mechanical engineer and (proto-) computer scientist who originated the idea of a programmable computer. Parts of his uncompleted mechanisms are on display in the London Science Museum. Working from Babbage's original plans, a computer was ultimately built and functioned perfectly. Built to tolerances achievable in the 19th century, the finished engine indicated that Babbage's machine would have worked. Babbage had even designed a printer; it featured astonishing complexity for a 19th century device.
