Island hopping.
Leap frogging or island hopping was how the Allies fought the Japanese in World War II. They concentrated on a few key islands that advanced their drive to Japan. They did not try to take every island. Admiral Nimitz took the Gilbert and Marshall Islands and then the Marianas and moved towards the Bonin Islands.
