In the synoptic gospels, no one whom Jesus knew had come to the crucifixion, but his mother Mary and others of his acquaintance stood afar off. In John's Gospel, Mary is at the cross, joined by the 'disciple whom Jesus loved' and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene. A late second-century tradition is that he beloved disciple was John, son of Zeberdee.
