The commanding Union general was Maj. General George B. McClellan. Several generals commanded different groups under his overall command:
II Corps was commanded by Brig. Gen. Edwin V. Sumner subdivided into the divisions commanded by Brig. Gens. Israel B. Richardson and John Sedgwick.
III Corps was commanded by Brig. Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman subdivided into the divisions commanded by Brig. Gens. Joseph Hooker and Philip Kearny.
IV Corps was commanded by Brig. Gen. Erasmus D. Keyes subdivided into the divisions commanded by Brig. Gens. Darius N. Couch and John J. Peck.
V Corps was commanded by Brig. Gen. Fitz John Porter subdivided into the divisions commanded by Brig. Gens. George W. Morell, George Sykes, and George A. McCall.
VI Corps was commanded by Brig. Gen. William B. Franklin subdivided into the divisions commanded by Brig. Gens. Henry W. Slocum and William F. "Baldy" Smith.
There were also some reserve forces included the cavalry reserve under Brig. Gen. Philip St. George Cooke (Jeb Stuart's father-in-law) and the supply base at White House Landing under Brig. Gen. Silas Casey.

General Lee was forcing the Union army of General McClellan out of their lines threatening Richmond. The battles were very vicious, resulting in heavy casualties for both sides, the bloodiest day was at Malvern Hill.

The Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle in the Civil War, and only lasted two days, April 6 & 7, 1862. The Union won this battle, and as a result, the Confederacy had to recede from much of Tennessee.

George McLellan. He was badly defeated, and some of Lincoln's cabinet wanted him replaced there and then. He lasted a few more months.

The Battle of Rocky Face Ridge saw the Union forces under the commands of generals George Thomas, James McPherson and John Scofield converged on May 7, 1864 on Confederate forces holding Rocky Face Ridge. After heavy fighting, Southern forces under General Joseph Johnston retreated to Resaca. This battle won by the Union, brought them closer to Atlanta, Georgia.
