First, chelation doesn't nor is it proposed to lower cholesterol directly. Chelation HAS been suggested as a potential treatment for coronary artery disease (CAD), as calcium plays a role in hardening of the arteries. The most definitive attempt large-scale, long-term attempt to test chelation therapy, begun in 2003 was cut-off early in 2008 due to poor experimental design and lack of controls. The American Heart Association, National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration have all come out and said there is no scientific evidence that chelation therapy is beneficial for CAD.
