Actually it has been known or rare occasion where a whole pack of lions have taken down an elephant. But it takes 4-5 of them. Although it is rare as yes the Elephants usually can just trample them. Which is why if a lion is solo hunting and not in a pack it keeps away from the larger elephants. Although sometimes it does try and get the baby ones for a quick snack.
