The Battle of the Somme was technically a victory for the allies; but the severe casualties suffered by both sides made it really a draw.
The Allies gained 12 kilometers of land; however the immense losses on both sides(French and British- 620,000 casualties/Germany- 450,000 casualties) cause it to be considered a draw.

They lost 620,000 casualties, the Germans around 500,000.
The 'fuel consumption' on the allied side was nearly 88.000 men per mile gained.
I'd say Germany. On the allied side, New Zealand contributed 15,000 men to this attack, of which 6,000 were wounded and 2,000 killed.
Over half of those killed have no known grave. Although these numbers are tiny in the context of the total casualties, the impact on a country with a comparatively tiny population was huge.

∙ 14y agoThe British and the French troops won the battle, but at a huge cost of lives. On the first day of the battle alone the British and the French troops suffered 40,000 injured and 20,000 dead. It was the bloodiest day in British Military History.
