The Irish Volunteers.A fore-runner of the IRA. The reason was to set up an Irish Republic, independent of Great Britain. Actually the leaders of the rebellion knew that they hadn't a hope of winning but they hoped that by sacrificing their own lives they would galvanise a general revolt. And it worked though the British helped by executing the leadership, converting the generally unpopular revolutionary leaders into martyrs overnight. The 1916 Rising inspired a countrywide revolt in 1919 that ended in British withdrawal. The Easter Rebellion started on Easter Monday, April 24th 1916.

An increasingly popular movement to return Ireland's home rule was infiltrated by more extreme nationalists who wished to reclaim inependence by force. These members of the IRB infiltrated many nationalist organizations such as sinn fein and the GAA. With the war on the continent they saw the chance to catch the English off guard but as the day neared, their luck turned sour with the capture if their guns and that. The military council decided to go ahead with the rebellion as a blood sacrafice which eventully became a success in that force became the popular way in which to end British rule.

Back in the early, early days Britain ruled over Ireland unfairly and cruel. This treatment spawned groups like the I.R.B. and the I.N.P. The one particular group (I.R.B.) was just waiting for the opportune moment (in this case WW1) to try and overthrow Britain.

The I.N.P. was arsing around and couldn't get irland independance so the I.R.B. took it up to themselves to do something.

Britain was busy because of WW1. The brotherhood chose Easter 1916 as Britain was occupied and that day had themes of sacrifice and rebirth. This was just one of the better republic attempts.
