Soon after the defeat of Union General Sherman at the Chickasaw Bayou, Union General McClernand arrived and he superseded General Sherman's command of the Mississippi River force. With their combined forces they decided to assault Confederate Fort Hindman that was located about fifty miles up the Arkansas River. With the aid of Federal gunboats, the Union army was able to capture the fort and because of that, gain control of the mouth of the Arkansas River.The Union forces assaulted the fort with 29,000 troops and 13 gunboats. The Confederates with no gunboats and 5,000 troops were defeated. Although this was a successful operation, it in no way affected the Union's problem with Vicksburg.
