The Opequon was a battle, better known as Third Battle of Winchester, fought on Sept. 19, 1864, between the Union Army of the Shenandoah, commanded by General Philip Sheridan and the Confederate Army commanded by Gen. Jubal Early. The Confederates were defeated after a bitter fighting, losing 3,610 dead, wounded, prisoners and missing. The Federals casualties and losses were 5,020.
