The Battle of Delville Wood was a subsidiary attack as part of the Somme Offensive, a battle fought during World War I that took place in South Africa. It lasted from July 15th to September 3rd of 1916 and saw the capture of the wood that had been skirted during the battle of Bazentin Ridge when Longueval fell to the British on July 9th of that same year (the details of this is an entirely different answer). The objective of the battle was to capture the whole forest. Why? Securing the woods became essential to the English because, unless the forest was cleared of German soldiers they had no hope of launching an attack on the German Switch Line. Ironically, the British did not fight the battle, but the South African natives (South Africa still being a "colony" of Great Britain at this time). As such 3, 150 men attacked the 9th Scottish Division. The attack was launched at dawn on July 15th. The regiment fought a heavy artillery battle, and successfully managed to clear the southern edge of German forces. Hand to hand combat continued until the South African forces were relieved on July 19th. The casualties: 766 dead among the four battalions, dead outnumbered wounded 4:1. Due to poor weather conditions, including heavy rain and mud, many of the dead, both South African and German were never recovered (even to this day). The Germans however, lost over 9,500 men by August alone. However, the woods would not be completely cleared of German forces until after another month of fierce fighting. The woods were final secured on August 25th by the 14th Division. However the woods was retaken by the Germans on March 24, and recaptured by the 38th (Welsh) Division on August 28.Today the woods remains as a memorial site called the Delville Wood Cemetery containing roughly 5,493 burials, most of which are unknown. The woods remains well-preserved by the South African Government with visible remains of the trenches, a museum and a monument dedicated to the fallen South Africans.
