Steve Jobs' partner, Steve Wozniak, worked for Hewlett-Packard (HP) before co-founding Apple. They needed to ensure that HP did not have any interest in their computer design, as they were developing the Apple I. This was crucial to avoid potential conflicts and to secure their independence in the burgeoning personal computer market.
In those days there was no PC market. Large established companies were not particularly interested as it was seen as more of a hobby than a business. There were probably people within HP who know Wozniak and Jobs, as they had both worked for HP, who would have been interested in what they were doing at a personal level.

Before collaborating with Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs was a high school student. While he was in high school, he worked at Hewlett Packard during the summer. Steve Wozniak also worked there. After high school, he went to Reed College in Portland OR for one semester, but audited classes after that. He lived as a homeless person for a while, eating and sleeping where he could and traveled to India, returning a Buddhist. He worked on and off as a technician at Atari, also with Steve Wozniak. By 1976, when Apple Computer was formed, he had lived what could be described as an unstable life. His experiences were a great contribution to 'thinking outside the box' and developing a new industry. What he was really inventing before Apple was himself. Steve Wozniak related in an interview: "I simply like triple digit numbers with all the things I'm involved with, the cost of making the Apple 1 was around $540 or there about and we agreed on the best markup, retail price above the cost of building it, which worked out to $666. Jobs then tacked on the 66 cents to make it an eye-catcher price for the ads with the sale and promotion publications of it to the public."
