The Nazi concentration and extermination camps were run and guarded by the SS. In all the bigger and most unpleasant camps it became increasingly common to 'trust' some prisoners with routine supervision of other prisoners. In exchange, they were allowed certain privileges, and of course they hoped that if they could impress their masters with their efficiency they would live longer. For example, they were usually responsible for dishing up the miserable meals and made sure they got more food than the others. This practice of bullying, inducing and forcing victims to collaborate was one of more odious aspects of the concentration camp system. The 'trusted' prisoners were called Capos (or Kapos).

The German occupiers set-up labour, concentration and death camps in occupied Poland. The Nazi created the death camps of Auschwitz II (Auschwitz-Birkenau), Chełmno, Bełżec, Majdanek, Sobibór and Treblinka. The Nazi German also created many concentration camps such as Auschwitz I.
Look up holocaust and concentration camps. Any answer I could post here wouldn't do it justice. The people that were tried had committed unspeakable acts to hundreds, if not thousands of people just because they were either Jewish or opponents of the Nazi regime.
