It didn't. This was a war strictly between Russia & Japan. Britain had a treaty with Japan; ANY nation taking sides would involve Great Britain. Quite naturally, any nation siding with Japan would have to face nations siding with Russia...such as France and Germany (who favored Russia).

World War I had Austria, Germany and Turkey fighting Great Britain, France and Russia. Then Russia dropped out because of the Russian Revolution. Eventually, the United States joined Great Britain and France because of the antiGerman sentiment caused by the Germans sinking the Lusitania and the Zimmerman telegram. (The Germans told the Mexicans that they would give them California and Texas back if Mexico would attack the United States.)
