Johnny's note to Ponyboy was important for his healing because it showed Johnny's care and gratitude towards Ponyboy. It made Ponyboy feel valued and strengthened their bond, providing him with comfort and support during a difficult time. While Johnny and Ponyboy were hiding out in the church they played Poker and read from the book Gone with the Wind. When Johnny had to leave to get supplies Ponyboy was sleeping so he wrote a note in the dust on the church floor.
After everything that has happened in the story Ponyboy finds a note from Johnny, that he had dictated to his nurse, in his copy if "Gone with the Wind". Johnny tells Ponyboy to "stay golden" refering to their previous conversations. This inspires Ponyboy to write his theme for English about all that has hardened to him in the last weeks. We then find out that the whole story was his theme.
After he dies he leaves the book "Gone with the Wind" and left a note inside
