The Puranas, a genre of ancient Indian texts, traditionally consist of 18 major Puranas and several minor ones. Among these, the major Puranas are often categorized into three groups: the Sattva (pure), Rajas (passionate), and Tamas (ignorant) Puranas. Each of these Puranas can contain various samhitas, or collections of hymns and verses, although the exact number of samhitas varies among different texts. Overall, the Puranas serve as a rich source of mythology, philosophy, and cultural history in Hindu tradition.
