Traditionally, Matthew appears first in the New Testament, then Mark, followed by Luke and finally John. All the New Testament gospels were originally anonymous until they were attributed to the persons whose names they now bear, later in the second century. Ian Wilson says, in Jesus, these names are mere attributions, and even as such are rather less reliable than attributions given to unsigned works of art.
