The BurningGhat (Poem) Prairie Schooner, December, 2002 by Swenson, Karen
The Burning Ghat
This young man, AIDS thin, yesterday hid from
our glances as we came to work. He tented
his blanket over razor ridges of
his vertebrae, his shaved head, to reserve
a little privacy where he and Death
could confer. Today, imprisoned in a cube
of wood and straw he's flaming in a corner
of the ghat. No mourners. No son lit his pyre.
But Kali gazes, young and beautiful,
from an old stone fragment, beautiful as he was.
