Psalm 82 is traditionally ascribed to Asaph the recorder.

Some scholars say that the Psalms were not really written until the Babylonian Exile, and were written over a period of more than two hundred years by unknown authors.

Psalm 82 was an early Psalm, written at a time when many Jews still held on to their ancient polytheistic beliefs. It portrays God in the congregation of the gods (KJV: 'mighty') and verses 6-7 has God say, " I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes."

The author will never be known by name, but in these verses he shows that he was an advocate of monotheism, telling his readers that all the other gods have been condemned to die like mortal men.
