It is about the Torrence family: Jack, Wendy, and their five year old son, Danny.

Jack had bad past experience; he got fired from his teaching job for nearly killing a student, and also breaking his son's arm. His friend Al Shockley offers him a job as the winter caretaker for the Overlook hotel, he can't refuse.


Danny is the one gifted with the Shining. He can tell what people are thinking, he knows when his parents are thinking about divorce. He is also gifted with visions. He gets several bloody visions right before they go to the hotel, seeing it as a warning.


Wendy has a feeling about the hotel as well. She knows that there will be little communication with the outside world, and that they will be almost completely snowed in all winter. Jack had a alcholic problem before, and she is concerned about her and her son's safety with him.


As the hotel itself begins to feed on Jack's past, Wendy and Danny are forced to avoid their own husband and father for the rest of the winter... or death may occur. Again.
