Joel Chandler Harris (December 9, 1848 - July 3, 1908) was an American journalist born in Eatonton, Georgia who wrote the Uncle Remus stories, including Uncle Remus; His Songs and His Sayings. Joel Chandler Harris, an Atlanta Constitution associate editor, compiled the Uncle Remus stories in a series of nine books that included 185 stories, based, initially, on stories he heard as a teenager from slaves when he lived on a Georgia plantation during the Civil War, under the tutelage of the plantation owner and newspaper publisher, Joseph Addison Turner. The first book, Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings, was published in 1880.
