The National Anthem was written by Francis Scott Key in 1812.
He was inspired to write the song after witnessing an attack on Fort McHenry by the British Navy. The fort received a severe pummeling, but survived with the American flag still flying overhead.
Key's Star-Spangled Banner was adopted by the U.S. Navy in 1889, and officially declared the national anthem in 1931.
