When I was in elementary school, (over half a century ago) it was touted as a "Chinese proverb". [It's probably an English teacher's creation, anyway, though!]
The way I learned it was: "He who knows not and knows not that he knows not-he is a child. Teach him! He who knows, but knows not that he knows, he is asleep-Wake him! He who knows and knows that he knows, he is a wise man-Seek him!" There are many other versions out there, however!
The author of that quote is unknown, but it is often attributed to ancient Persian wisdom. It highlights the importance of self-awareness and the willingness to learn and grow. The quote emphasizes the difference between ignorance and awareness, and the value of being open to education and personal development.
One version of this oft-quoted adage is: --- He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool. Shun him. He who knows not, and knows that he knows not is a student. Teach him. He who knows, and knows not that he knows, is asleep. Wake him. He who knows, and knows that he knows is wise. Follow him.
