Jesus names the brothers 'Boanerges' at Mark 3:17, just a little before event K (4:36-41), in which Jesus rebukes the wind. In the matching event K' (10:35-45 - cf 3:17), Jesus rebukes the ‘sons of thunder’. The strange fact that he rebuked (ἐπετίμησεν) the wind in the first event matches the rebuke he gives James and John in the second, and the storm in the first event provides a literary reference to the 'sons of thunder' in the second. Thus, events K and K' clearly form a pair, although the reason for this pair is not immediately apparent, particularly if we are not familiar with Greek mythology.

In event K', the author associates the brothers with Castor and Polydeuces, sons of Zeus the thunderer, who were often portrayed as seated on the right hand and left hand of Zeus. By comparing the sons of thunder with the sons of Zeus, Mark was, in the minds of first-century readers, comparing Jesus himself with Zeus, whom he will replace.
