Whom is "they"; I assure you that Hephaestus did not go where he did not wish to, save when he was thrown from Olympus twice once by Hera and then Zeus
Hephaestus was the child of Hera and Zeus, whom were both gods. So that made him a pure god already. He was the god of craftsmanship, blacksmith, fire and 'technology' - not like our modern technology -. He was in charge of making the weapons and armor for the gods. Who could better suite a god, than a god ?
Hephaestus has several rivals all of whom take issue with his ugly looks. Cheif amongst these are Ares and Hera his mother. Ares and him are rivals over the affections of Aphrodite, to put it another way Aphrodite is married to Hephaestus and because he is ugly has several affairs with Ares. Hephaestus has mommy issues because she has attempted to kill on multiple occasions because if his looks, this only made it work. I know there are other myths that contradict what I have here, but that's the nature of Greek mythology. I hope this was helpful, thanks.

In Greek mythology, Hephaestus was known for creating incredible weapons and items for the gods, such as Zeus' thunderbolts and Athena's shield. Additionally, Hephaestus was known for seeking revenge against those who wronged him, such as his mother Hera whom he trapped in a golden throne. These actions highlight his craftsmanship skills and his complex relationships with other gods.

Percy Jackson first kisses Annabeth in the fouth book, Percy Jackson and the Labyrinth, during their escape from a bunch of Telkhines. In the end of the fifth book, Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian, Percy and Annabeth kissed in the hill, after their celebration dinner. Then, the campers, whom all was eavesdropping, lifted them on their soldiers and dumped them into the lake, where Percy then creates an air bubble and had a "underwater kiss of all time".
