First, Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto tried to find the Wizard of Oz. They had been dropped by a cyclone in the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands of Oz. But they wanted to get back home to Kansas. And they were told by the Munchkins, and the Good Witch of the North, to seek help from the Wizard, as the powerful Supreme Ruler of Oz. Then, Dorothy and Toto tried to find the Wicked Witch of the West. For the Wizard said that he would help Dorothy, Toto, and their friends the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion only if the five eliminated the Witch. In the original book published in 1900, the Wizard asked the five to kill the Witch. In the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz, he asked them to bring back her broomstick. The Wizard purported to help the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion by giving them what each already had: a heart, a brain, and courage, respectively. He was going to take Dorothy and Toto back to Kansas, but his hot air balloon took off before the two could get back on board the basket. And so Dorothy and Toto tried to find Glinda the Good Witch. For the Soldier with the Green Whiskers, in the Emerald City of Oz, told them to seek her help once the Wizard was gone.
