The lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos, was built by the ancient Egyptians. It was built and designed by Sostratus of Knidos. Its initial construction was done under the command of Satrap (governor) Ptolemy I Soter, Egypt's first Macedonian ruler and a general of Alexander the great, and completed during the reign of his son, Ptolemy Philadelphos.
Sailing in this coastal region was very dangerous, so it was built to help the sailors navigate their return to the Great Harbor. Happy.

Some sources say the Lighthouse of Alexandria was built with granite and limestone blocks. In 1994, divers found chunks of limestone underwater that they believed to be from the lighthouse, so most likely it WAS built with limestone. However, no one can be sure.

Alexandria's lighthouse was built using solid blocks of granite and limestone. The Lighthouse took 12 years to construct, and was built between 290-270 BC/BCE. After 1500 yrs. the lighthouse was knocked down after several earthquakes, but some parts of the lighthouse still remain on the shore of the harbor and in the water.
The Lighthouse of Alexandria was built in ALexandria, Egypt around 250BC. The Lighthouse destroyed by a series of earthquakes over several centuries, until in 1480AD even the concrete base was no longer able to be found.
