They believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe even after Galileo presented his idea. It was later proven that the sun was the centre of the universe.
Galileo
Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo; about 400 years ago
In the opinion of many historians, Galileo Galileo studies of the universe led to Sir Issac Newton's discoveries on the laws of gravity. Galileo's support of Copernicus and his idea that the earth revolved around the sun, led Galileo into prison as this idea went against Church theology. After Galileo recanted he was freed.
Galileo got his idea from a professor
No, that was what the scriptures said, but Copernicus's model, also promoted by Galileo, had the Sun at the centre instead.
Nicolaus Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, and of course Galileo all had hands in challenging the geocentric model and promoting the idea of heliocentrism.
Its because he proposed the idea that the earth was not the center of the Universe, rather the sun was. This idea went against what the church had been saying.
No--he believed that the sun was the center of the universe.
Galileo
Galileo had the first idea, although Newton takes credit for it because of his perfection the matter.
Our Universe today is MUCH bigger than Copernicus could have imagined. In the first place, their idea was that our galaxy was the universe, and had no idea that many of those stars they wondered about were actually galaxies much like our own, including some vastly larger. The next major advance was the invention of the telescope followed by Galileo's creative studies with that, and that was when they began to realize that ours was not the only planet in the Universe.
